Eateries in Bangkok, because we need to eat!
The choice is overwhelming, but I’m purposely keeping away from the high end eateries…you’ll have your favourites of course…so do I. Further, street food is the pinnacle of the eating experience in this country, but to single out favourites would be meaningless…so! Not in any particular order…
I conscientiously avoid western food…lie number 1!
Enjoying an English breakfast as one does, not too often, but it’s important to remember what it’s all about! So my first recommendation is a wee place on Sukhumvit 101/1, aptly named 101!
Why? Great taste, good portions, nice venue, amazing price.
Where? 21/1 Thanon Sukhumvit 101/1. You can have dinner and beers too, in the secret garden?

Number two. Eats Payao Bar and Restaurant, 5/4 Yenakart Road.
Managed, prepped, cooked and hosted by a great couple, Khao Priscilla & Gav Koh. Dual cuisine, wine, spirits and beer, lovely setting, you’ll want to come again. They also offer home delivery, run a farmers market, and throw BBQs too. Ring them. Tell: 083 262 6142.
I often go to a lovely little restaurant off Paholyothin. It’s called Khua Kling & Pak Sod Ari. Though it closes early by normal standards (21.30) , it’s such a gem. Beautiful Thai food, staff are so courteous, and the building itself is worth the visit. I was there one evening when the Thai Deputy PM was dining. Not sure he recognised me, but his body guards kept to their posts, lucky for them. So as my third choice a suggestion is for you to visit 24 Rama VI Soi 30, Samsen Nai. Tel: 02 617 2553.
Don’t wait till Friday to eat fish…ever! There is a very busy fishy place on Phaholyothin, called Lhao Lhao. Coming in as my fourth recommendation, be warned it’s popularity speaks volumes. Always busy, ok if you’re on your own or as a couple for seating, but booking might be best. It’s a Thai-Chino place (I don’t do puns!), and I’ve never been disappointed. You can find it at 1271/7 Phaholyothin, Samsen Nai. Opposite Kasikorn Bank, parking is directed outside the establishment. BTS Ari is 2 minutes away. Be warned, it’s busy but worth the trip…ring them, Tel: 02 271 4260.
So my fifth and last one for this visit to the ‘keys’, is a classic among them all. Set in a side street, understated, but so well run and delivered. A place where if you enjoy supremely prepared and beautifully presented food then please don’t hesitate and go to Uncle John’s on Suan Phlu 8 Alley.
He, let’s call him John, the chef and owner, has an interesting background. I won’t spoil it, but talk to him about it. If you like your meat, then this gentleman will deliver it at its best. I’m sure they cater for non-carnivores too, but I don’t like to get involved in such issues when food is involved.
Tel: 081 373 3865, give them a ring. For what it’s worth I took my mum here last year, and she is the consummate diner and critic. Full marks!
Bon something…!
